I informed my housemate and his girlfriend that it was, pressingly, thirsty thursday today (among other things), and while I would've loved to do some hemp or othersuch inspired beverage, I inquired what they'd like to imbibe on this special day. My housemate's girlfriend perked up, "Long Island Iced Tea... but not too strong because I have to drive". Now, most people who've had more than a few Long Islands wouldn't be out of line in thinking that the beverage tends to be a more "dangerous" drink, and truthfully many sugary soda based mixtures can be easy to overindulge in.
A proper Long Island firstly deserves better than the mixes typically served in bars, but more importantly; it shouldn't serve as a swarthy vessel to sail the drunken seas. I myself have made the mistake of following the "ounce of each" recipe you might find about the internet, which makes for a potent and unappealing beverage. A night out (or in) ought to be about enjoying yourself, and it's important to remember that intoxication shouldn't be proprietary to that end. I hope this recipe serves as a friendly reminder that drinking is about a journey, not a destination.
Long Island Iced Tea
- 1/2 oz gin
- 1/2 oz vodka
- 1/2 oz white rum
- 1/2 oz blanco tequila
- 1/2 oz triple sec
- 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
- 3/4 oz simple syrup
- 3 oz cola (more or less depending on tastes)
- Lemon wedge for garnish
Combine all ingredients except the cola in a mixing glass with ice and stir well. Strain the mixture into a tall ice-filled glass, top with cola, and gently stir a few times to mix. Purposefully place your wedge on or in the glass, and then just like, chill, man. Enjoy your one-ness with the universe and this tasty beverage.
