Wow, that's an awful title, but I'll do almost anything for a little extra portmanteau. Which is almost as much as I'd do for for a delicious Caesar! Thankfully, Clamato and vodka are plentiful in our land of the north, strong, and free; so I don't really have to do much at all. Anyways, it's late, I'm feeling lazy, and if you don't already know about Caesars (It's National Caesar Day, if my badly conceived title didn't tip you off), you're probably beyond help anyways.
Today's cocktail is my smokey take on the unlikely, yet beloved Canadian beverage. The drink gets a little character from the scotch, and I've named it Hadrian's Wall because well, that's the biggest historical connection I could come up with between Scotland and Rome (Ayyyy, Scotch? Caesar? Get it?!!). As I understand it, Emperor Hadrian and the Romans were cruising through what we know today as the UK, and they ran into a bunch of these badass warrior Picts the Romans described as barbarians, who didn't take so kindly to the fact that they were fronting on their turf. The Romans were all like, "Damn, we don't wanna mess with that", so they basically built a wall to keep the people they were invading from invading back... or something like that. Anyways, I'm better at drinking than history, so here: enjoy.
Hadrian's Wall
- 1 oz scotch
- 1 oz vodka
- 1/2 oz lime juice
- ~5 Dashes chipotle hotsauce
- ~3 Dashes Worcestershire sauce
- ~2 Dashes liquid smoke
- Clamato to top
- Smoked salt / seasoning mix (for rim)
- Some nice smokey meat and/or cheese for garnish
- Savoury herb sprig (basil, thyme, etc.) for garnish
First thing, you wanna get a nice big glass, run some lime juice along the outside rim, and coat it with some of your preferred seasoning. Fill that glass with ice. Dump your liquors, lime and flavourings in there. Top it with Clamato. Build your own delicious little wall of meat and cheese on a skewer of sorts, and add a slapped sprig of your choice of herb to give your nose an extra treat. Then wonder why any other ingredients of geographical or cultural importance weren't considered for the name of this drink...
